Potential of .tel

Posted on May 2009

Maybe you’ve heard of .tel, maybe you haven’t.  Yes its another TLD, but I am going to try to show you how it will be much more.  I believe we will all know .tel very well some day.

Imagine for a second . . . your cell phone - instead of storing phone numbers - storing .tel addresses. . . thats right you put your friends .tel address in your phone and all his numbers automatically pop up when you select him from your contact list.  Now imagine the power of this when someone changes their phone number.   The person who owns the .tel address changes their number and voila, like magic all the phones with his .tel in them are updated!  No more sending crazy texts, emails, facebook posts, etc to let people know that your info has changed.

Ok, can you understand the power behind this yet.  .tel addresses will someday be the new way to contact people.  For example, pete.tel is easier to remember than any 10 digit phone number.  When information on the .tel changes it automatically propogates to all devices that have the address in them.

There are certain privacy issues that will need to be worked out.  But try to understand its not what your .tel address shows, but what someones mobile device sees.  Privacy to the internet, but open to mobile devices?  That sounds like a cool little idea.

Ok, now heres another little thing to think about.  Lets say you are about to write an email to your friend.  Why not put in his .tel address?  The email program searches the internet for the email associated with his .tel and you’ve just sent an email using a .tel address.

What other things could this mean?  How about .tel domains and trading .tel domains.  Well, already .tel addresses are trying to be sold all over the internet.  Go to a registrar and perform a search for a name with a .tel ending.  All the normal, generic, everyday names are gone my friends.  Generic .tels may become very premium domains that will be bought or sold.   And generic business .tel addresses  . . . would you type in restaurant.tel before you dial 1-800-restaurant?  I would.  People try type-in generic addresses on the internet constantly.  But nobody calls generic 1-800 numbers.

And there you have it.  A fresh look into the new .tel phenomenom.

Parking Your Domains

Posted on May 2009

Domain parking is a very familiar part of the web, even if you have no idea what domain parking is. If you have ever arrived at a web address that only shows a list of links to other websites, you have just visited a parked page.

Experienced domain owners utilize parking companies everyday to monetize their domains. Domain parking is one of the most simple and straight forward monetization techniques in the domain trading industry. With this method, you can have a number of advantages and benefits.

If you have a few or even many domains that are “un-developed” then domain parking is possibly the easies and best method of earning money from them. A good and efficient landing page is a mandatory requirement, if you want to attract more numbers of site visitors. You may wish to park your expired domains with a number of domain parking services. This will allow you to derive maximum possible revenue from your domains. The pay out rate varies among different parking firms. It is possible to mix and match your expired domains with these domain parking firms. In all, domain parking services are an excellent opportunity to create the first viable income source for your domains.

Parking offers the opportunity to make some money when potential visitors click on any of the sponsored adds on your parked page. The company that is advertising pays for people to click on their ad. You share the “click commission” with the parking company.

Procedure:

1) There are many parking companies out there. It is essential to pick the best one for your domain names.

2) Decide whether you want a simple parking page for your domains or a more sophisticated parking page. Most of the companies that offer simple parking pages generally do not charge to park your domains with them. More sophisticated parking pages may cost you some money. Usually they will charge you a monthly fee. These companies offer more customized content, that can help drive more visitors to your page.

3) Change your Domain Name Servers (DNS) to the nameservers that your parking company provides you. This change is made at your registrar, inside your account.

4) Once you open your account, the domain parking firm will provide a dedicated web parking page for your domain. The page will contain a number of sponsored links, advertising banners and a search box on the top of the page. Premium domain parking services may even insert relevant articles, snippets and content on the page.

5) You then earn advertising revenue for the traffic that visits your parked page. Domain parking companies generally share a potion of income generated, while others allow you to add your Google Adsense links or other ads and let you keep the entire commission.

Trademark Infringement Cybersquating and Domains

Posted on May 2009

Cybersquatting (also known as domain squatting), according to the United States federal law known as the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, is registering, trafficking in, or using a domain name with bad faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else. The cybersquatter then offers to sell the domain to the person or company who owns a trademark contained within the name at an inflated price.

This is the definition is provided to us at Wikipedia.

Everyone has mis-typed a web address and ultimately wound up at a site that doesn’t look like the one they are trying to reach . Usually this site is a parked page where the owner is looking to cash in on mispelled entries. This tecnique, called cybersquating, over the years has made some folks lots of money and other folks have wound up in a lawsuit. Being sued by a trademarked company can cost lots of money and provide many headaches.

Although different courts have different tests, the central concept is confusion in the marketplace. The law protects against consumer confusion by ensuring that the marks on the same or similar products or services are sufficiently different.

Basically if a domain contains a trademarked name, it is a trademark infringement. For example, the domain microsoftcreations.com is an obvious violation of a trademark. There is really no good reason to own or register these types of domains. These trademark violatioin domains are everywhere. One only has to look at the domain auctions on eBay or Godaddy.com and you will see hundreds of them on a daily basis. Any true domain investor or domainer will always stay away from these names . . . and you should too!

Final Appraisal.com will not appraise any domain that is a trademark infringement.

If you want to buy a domain name, it is crucial that you obtain a domain appraisal report for that  domain name. You will be in a better bargaining position when you know the true value of the  domain name you are purchasing. Never purchase domain names without first getting a  professional domain appraisal!

Domain Appraisal Facts You Should Consider:

  • Domains appraisals help you make sure you are not getting ripped off.
  • Domain appraisals help establish mutually acceptable negotiation parameters.
  • Appraisals may give you leverage to negotiate a lower price than the seller is asking.
  • There is no one standard in valuing domains, that is why you need a professional opinion.

Manual Appraisals

Posted on May 2009

We manually appraise every domain name.  NO softwares are used.  Unlike most services and ALL free services, we do not offer quick computer generated results.

Why computer generated appraisals are inaccurate:

  • Computers can not possibly take into account the true current market for domains.
  • Computers do not take into account past or previous sales and their meaning to current valuations.
  • Most people know that computers inflate the appraisal price just to keep the customer coming back.
